Even though they were founded in 2009 during one of the most challenging economic environments for business, SolTherm Energy has turned these challenges into an asset through their ability to deliver clean energy at a lower cost than conventional sources. SolTherm’s primary focus is in the solar energy industry: they develop, finance, operate and monitor solar plants in North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina, Georgia, and California. SolTherm provides its clients with low-risk, high-return solutions that utilize solar technologies and innovative financing programs. One of SolTherm’s fastest growing offerings is their NoCapExTM program that enables customers to immediately start receiving the energy saving and environmental benefits of solar without a large up-front capital investment.

An example of SolTherm’s innovative solar financing solution can be found at Silver Bluff Village in Haywood County. The Silver Bluff system, one of the first at a health care facility in North Carolina, utilizes the sun’s energy to generate hot water and reduce overall energy costs. Compared to their previous energy source, the 195-resident facility is expected to save more than $174,000 over the life of the system, allowing Silver Bluff Village to invest in improved patient care. This project is important because it illustrates the benefits of the NoCapEx™ program while at the same point decreasing energy costs and having a positive impact on our healthcare system.
Scott Clark, the chief strategist for SolTherm, has worked in the energy industry since graduating from UNC Asheville. Prior to SolTherm, Clark founded and served as CEO of Appalachian Energy where he managed the world’s largest solar thermal heating and cooling installation. Clark also puts his clean energy expertise to work on the North Carolina Economic Development Workforce Board, where he was appointed by Governor Perdue.
According to Clark, one of the keys to their early success has been their location in Western North Carolina. The established alternative energy and environmental movements in the region provided critical early sales and a springboard to expand into one of the fastest growing global industries. SolTherm also wants to do business where their employees are passionate about their job, the company they work for, and their community and Western North Carolina provides exactly that environment.
